Burial of the Sardine Gijón

When they tell you that nobody knows how it all started, you can be sure that you are about to hear a curious story. With the Burial of the Sardine which is celebrated tomorrow in a big way throughout Asturias as the final point of Carnival, I confess that nobody knows how it all started.

A priori, the ingredients are the most crazy. You have to put together a sardine of dolphin or sperm whale size, depending on the case, some plañideras of undefined sex (The black clothes and veils can cover both men and women), some false priests and jerifaltes willing to make a fool of themselves in a very formal way, a band that plays everything except funeral melodies, the reading of a will ( because there is always a discourse) irreverent and shameless and a burial that does not exist (because Sardine is usually burned).
